THE FUTURE'S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE'S LEVENS...

Bradley sparks good comeback

Longlevens Reserves travelled to in form Shurdington Rovers expecting a hard fought game and that’s exactly what they got. The gaffer shuffled the pack again this week, reverting to a good old English 4-4-2, the Smyllies playing as full backs and Zane King slotting into the centre of defence with CJ Hunt to make up the back four. Jimmy Hancox kept his place on the right, Mark Moore leaving his customary on the right, behind the front two but getting back to help out role, to play on the left, with Chris Trout moving into the middle of midfield alongside Jamie Allen. Last weeks front two of Nick Bradley and Lee Wood keeping their places up top. Clive Cooper and the returning Ben Lambert were this weeks splinter arses.

Levens got off to the worst possible start when a mistake at the back let in the Shurdington forward to slot home with just seconds on the clock. This kicked the away side into gear with Nick Bradley going close after being put through by Mark Moore. The first half was closely fought with both sides more or less restricted to strikes from distance. Paul Kent being called into action to save a 1 on 1 with his feet the only action of note until on the stroke of half time, a corner from the left was somehow deflected into the path of an unmarked Shurdington player on the line, who had the easiest of tasks to slot home for a 2-0 half time lead.

With Jase Dodsworths concise f-word ridden team talk ringing in the boys ears, Levs scored almost straight from the restart. Nick Bradley latching on to a long ball to sublimely leg roll the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box! With the away side now dominating it was surely only a matter of time before they equalised and fifteen minutes in, that’s exactly what happened. Mark Moores looping cross from the right, striking the top of the cross bar and as the ball dropped from the sky , a posse of longlevens players gathered on the goal line, although they needn’t have bothered, as the Shurdington number 7, clearly on a bung, needed no help in nodding into his own net! Cheers lad!

With Beardy up front now becoming clearly frustrated by his teams lack of endeavour and some unrelenting insults from Clive Cooper about the state of the lady garden round his face, Levens went in search of a winner, Lee Wood and Jamie Allen both coming close.

Shurdington almost snatched a winner with 15 minutes to go, but Chris Trout somehow managed to get a block in. With Allen and Jimmy Hancox looking menacing going forward it looked as though Longlevens may snatch a win, but it wasn’t to be. A superb second half display by the back four of Smyllie, Smyllie, King and Hunt saw levens through to the end, with Kent rarely being tested. Hunt, obviously feeling that his performance was far superior than any of his team mates, chose to go for a bevy on his own in the local pub!

Final Score 2-2
